Though it’s been a mild winter in our parts, this is one of the tougher times of the year for many…no matter the weather. The holidays are a distant memory. For those in the teaching profession this is the time of year when they haven’t quite come to the crest of the hill and headed downward toward summer vacation. Lack of sunshine in many areas crowds in on people’s psyche. New Year’s resolutions are already falling by the wayside.
I hope you’re not feeling that way. But if you are, I encourage you to take just a moment and consider these ten ways to appreciate today. Just today. As Jesus said, “Tomorrow will worry about itself” (Matthew 6:34).
- The fresh smell of toast in the house before you head out the door.
- A hug from someone you love.
- Working heat or air conditioning in your car.
- A laugh with a friend.
- A healthy lunch.
- A co-worker who leaves a cookie or candy bar on your desk.
- Late afternoon Diet Coke, tea, or coffee.
- Comfortable clothes and a warm sweatshirt when you get home from work or school.
- Reading the first few pages, or last few pages, of a book.
- Climbing into a soft, warm bed.
What are you appreciating today? Leave your response in the comment section below.
This is a very positive way of looking at the day. Thanks!
I'm working on a study series (which I present to the adult midweek class at my church, as well as put online) on finding life's meaning in God and His glory. Today I'm revising the unit on how God is glorified through the means of grace (as well as private prayer and Bible reading), and the research I've done has been a truly powerful reminder of God's greatness and goodness.
Jason, you get the prize for being the most consistent, most thoughtful "commenter." Thanks for your reminder today of the glorious Means of Grace…TRULY a daily blessing!
Sunshine. I am thankful for lots and lots of sunshine.
Amen, to that, Bro. You no longer live in the land of a thousand cloudy days. It's got to be an incredible boost to the demeanor. I'd like to give it a try one day… 😉
I have a calendar that makes note of how many minutes of daylight we gain each day – and I am grateful for every one of them! Also, there's nothing like a floral scented candle. A scent that reminds you of the days of spring and summer to come and a flickering flame that gives you that feeling of warmth and coziness even in the cold, gray light of winter. I have been known to sing a hymn or two in the shower to lift my spirits – even though I am probably the only one to appreciate my voice! Looking forward to reading your blog also makes me appreciate the day – I look forward to being given something to think about.
Why, thank you very much for the kind comment! I, too, appreciate so very much the extra added daylight each day. I need it! Also, recently Tammy and I have been lighting a candle when we eat dinner. It's been a really nice, warm addition.
Very good list. I can relate to many of them. I think I thank God every night when I get to crawl into my warm bed.
It's especially nice when you have a heated mattress pad. If you don't have one, you must get one. It will change your life! 😉
