10 Christmas Carols I’d Be Glad to Never Hear Again

The 24 Hour Christmas stations have already been going a couple of weeks. Christmas specials are on every night of the week. Christmas songs are playing in the stores.

It didn’t take me long to remember once again that there are certain Christmas songs and carols that I don’t ever have to hear again. If these songs would go away never to be played on a radio station or in a shopping mall again, my Christmas would be so much merrier.

  1. Any Christmas song sung by Elvis (Enough said)
  2. Silent Night (Yep. I know. Sacrilege.)
  3. Jingle Bell Rock (Any version; Jingle Bells is bad enough)
  4. Little Drummer Boy (Too much prrrrrumming)
  5. Santa Baby (What?)
  6. Sleigh Ride (Friends are calling “yoo hoo”?)
  7. The Twelve Days of Christmas (AAAAARRRRGGHHHH!)
  8. I Saw Mommy Kissing Santa Claus (Really?)
  9. Let It Snow! Let It Snow! Let It Snow! (I wish it would all melt)
  10. Grandma Got Run Over By a Reindeer (I hope this song does)

Please don’t consider me a grinch. I just want a Christmas season that’s filled with classier Christmas joy.

Which Christmas song or carol would you, given the chance, wipe off the face of the earth? Go ahead. Tell me. You’ll feel much better.

  1. We're all in agreement here: that stupid Paul McCartney song. Ugh! It's the WORST. Sing "simply having a wonderful Christmas time" 150 times and call it a song.

However, we all love "Silent Night". It's one of the only religious Christmas songs played in regular rotation on the radio.

  2. First of all, the fact that you don't have any of the Alvin and the Chipmunk songs on your list is a joke. But really your number one is no Elvis? I am no longer speaking with you and I am now officially an agnostic.

    • To each his own. No Elvis! Never liked Elvis….especially Elvis singing Christmas songs. I guess this is the one issue where we part ways. 😉

  3. How you don't have Last Christmas by George Michael on you list befuddles me this morning. Worst. Christmas. Song. EVER! I tend to not like performances of songs rather than the song itself. For that reason, you can move O Holy Night off of the list for me. I think that this song has the most terrible recordings, IMHO.

      • I do disagree with Santa Baby, the original with Eartha Kitt. Cute song. And I better not see anyone put All I Want For Christmas is You by Mariah Carey. One of my favorite contemporary secular Christmas songs!

  4. Christmas Shoes. If I am a little kid and my mother is dying, I am wishing for her to get better, not for her feet to look good in her casket. I am sure Jesus is not going to be impressed with her Manolo Blahniks.

(Simply Having) A Wonderful Christmastime and Merry Christmas (War is Over). Beatle Prejudice; perhaps; but erase both of them please).

I am sure there are more…..

  5. OK, I was fine 'til Mannheim Steamroller was 'added'. Best re-arrangements of classic Christmas tunes without destroying them.

  6. Hmmm…thought I was the only sacreligous person at Mt.

Calvary concerning Silent Night. I am learning to like a well done instrumental version, but really do not like singing it. It will be difficult for me to keep a straight face at the candlelight service knowing my pastor does not like the song either! (P.S. I really don't care for A Mighty Fortress either…now I am really on the "black list."

  7. Agree with all but 3, 6 and 9. I'll also concur with War is Over or whatever it's called. Am not a big fan of "It Came Upon a Midnight Clear." I tend to like more obscure songs that you won't hear on the radio (or probably in Christmas Eve worship) – "Where Shepherds Lately Knelt" and "All My Heart This Night Rejoices." When are you going to ask for our 10 favorites?

  8. I would not be a fan of the "I Want a Hippopotamus for Chrismtas, but it has become a challenge to find something with a hippo for my girls and nieces. It all started with those small plastic hippos in my collection of kindergarten things…..

  9. I absolutly despise Bruce Spingsteen version of Santa Claus is coming to town Not a real fan of song anyway but I jsut cringe everytime on the falt chorus.

Grandma/Reindeer in also a top contender for worst.

I am with you on Where Shepards Lately knelt and just about anything by John Rutter esp Candlelight Carol

  10. Mary, Did You Know.

I always finish that line in my head with "that you're my hero" from that "wind beneath my wings" song.

  11. As far as I'm concerned, THE LITTLE DRUMMER BOY can drum himself from the planet earth forever and ever. If I never hear it again it will be too soon! Prrrrum, prrrrum, prrrrum, indeed!

  12. Yes, enough Mannheim Steamroller and Trans Siberian Orchestra for me! Can't believe I forgot those. Maybe I was finally making progress.

Gotta shudder at the potential loss of Silent Night and Mighty Fortress though. Although I can do without the acapella verse of Silent Night….

  13. I'll see your list and raise you a "Silver Bells". I like Silent Night accompanied by guitars though. Most department store Christmas music is painful , the other day I almost had to leave Macy's because whatever it was they were playing was making me gag!
